Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Monica knew from an early age what she wanted to do. “I remember the actual moment when I knew what I would do for the rest of my life,” she says. Monica was attending a private school and it was career day. Her teacher brought in her extremely handsome fiance; the students knew of him through the teacher’s comments and photos, but Monica felt there was something else familiar about him. “Once he came in the classroom, I knew instantly where I recognized him from – he did the news on Channel 7. At that moment, I knew what I wanted to do for a living – I wanted to be a news anchor.”
From then on, Monica started doing everything she could to hone her skills, including public speaking, presentation and enunciation. She would emcee community events and local fashion shows to practice. Always ready and willing to do whatever it took to get to the next level, she enrolled in a production class for her local TV cable access channel. “We did everything there – shoot events, produce our own stories, host the program. By the time I got to college, I had enough experience to get credit for three classes. It was a bit of a quandary for my professors – How would they teach me things I hadn’t already done in real life?” she adds.
Does Monica get to her goal? Stay tuned for more!
